Weekend Wonderings

Had Charles Carl Roberts IV not killed himself ....

How would we be balancing out our society's thirst for blood with the deep-seated Amish belief in forgiveness?

And will we ever learn?????????

This whole story has stunned me from the start. It is beyond human for the Amish to seemingly not be angry. Certainly, though, there has to be a sense of relief that he will hurt no one again.

Yes, he will hurt no one again. I suppose on a human level, I can understand the desire some people express for retribution. I think it gets back to how human persons are relational.

I think that underneath everything else in the this fallen world, there's this sense of "You've done something to cause me to feel really bad, and I don't think you'll understand it until I can do something to you that makes you feel the same way I do, and then we'll be able to talk to each other again."

Except that is never how it turns out. It's a lie.

Now, defense of self or others, that's legitimate. So if a person is a danger to everyone around him, and even jail doesn't prevent him/her from killing other people, then something other than indefinite detention might be worth discussing.
